The solstice marks the shortest day and return of the light to the Northern Hemisphere, and the longest day in the Southern Hemisphere. It is a time to honour the light of the Sun, and reflect on our inner light and the path ahead. It is a portal of information, messages and storytelling, a deep recalibration for the year ahead.

You will need:

2 x long candles

A carving tool or small knife

Candle holder

Extra long matches

Preparation:

Create a quiet, sacred space where you can be undisturbed.

Make sure that you have enough time to sit in meditation and watch the candles as they burn. Do not leave the candles unattended and avoid having to extinguish the candles until they have burnt completely.

Clean the energy of the candles by rolling them in salt. Clean off the salt before you begin.

Ritual:

Take one candle for each year.

First review this year and carve into the wax any words, symbols or images that represent what you are letting go of.

Next, repeat the process on the second candle for the year ahead, marking what you are calling in.

Light the candles as described below, speaking out loud and gesturing with your hand, first this year and then the next:

I open this sacred space

(strike the match)

In honour of the north, south, east and west

(move the match in the directions as you do so)

The sun, the moon

(draw a circle first clockwise and then anti-clockwise with the match)

The planets above and the earth below

As above, so below

(move the match to the top and bottom of the candle)

As within, so without

(move the match to the front and back of the candle)

And so it is

(light the candle)

And so it is

With a soft gaze, watch the candles as they burn. Maintain focused awareness and feel deeply into your body and pay attention to any thoughts, sensations or emotions that arise within you.

What do you notice about the quality of the flame?

Is it stable or volatile?

Do the candles burn fast or slow, evenly or unevenly?

What messages or insights do they offer you?

Follow the instructions below to further interpret any messages within the flames.

Interpretation:

Strong, Steady Flame - clear energy in flow without obstacles

Weak or Small Flame - low energy, increased clarity required

Extinguished Flame - obstacles, reevaluate desires or address timing

Flickering Flame - external influences, instability

Bright Flame - aligned goals, supportive energy

Dancing Flame - passion, intensity, need for grounding

Rapidly Burning Flame - successful manifestation in short time frame

Crackling, hissing Flames - external influences and unexpected events

Blue Flame - divine guidance and protection

Yellow Flame - strong intuition and communication

Red Flame - strong desire and emotional volatility

Blue Flame - divine guidance and protection

Clear Smoke: clear path ahead

Dark Smoke: blockages and interference

Central wax burns creating hollow tunnel with high walls - narrow perspective or limited energy flow

Uneven, burns to one side - internal or external unresolved issues. Left side feminine energies or people, right side masculine energies or people

Candle Drips or Tears - emotional release and healing
